The main objective of the Co.Tutor is to improve participation of SMEs of the construction industry in educational programs which include vocational training (dual training, certificate of professionalism, etc.).

For this purpose, during the project, a series of guidelines will be accomplished, such as, for instance: analysis and proposal of strategic solutions which help to overcome difficulties that the SME may find to receive apprentices and to promote the figure of in company tutor, a key player for the successful learning of the apprentice, creating a framework in which his competences would be recognized.

Formation for the transformation

The construction industry have been constantly affected by the economic crisis and faces the challenge of being able to emerge stronger, responding to a request which demands a more skilled workforce, due both to its technification and to ageing population replacement.

One of the solutions that the public authorities are promoting is the commitment for continuing learning which combines classroom-based training with vocational training, which is a modality that is not being as successful as expected neither in Spain nor in Italy.

The need to address the issue of youth unemployment trough this training seems indispensable in both countries, since they are at the top of youth unemployment rates and unemployed youth without secondary education between the European Union states.

Main objectives and steps

In this context, work-based learning is a solid opportunity to allow apprentices and Enterprises construct their future, and in this essential sense, the participation of SMEs of the sector. Consequentially, the main objective of the Project is to improve SMEs involvement in the apprenticeship, through the development of actions in order to obtain:

  • The generation of synergies with and between business representatives of the construction, as well as key actors to boost the culture of continuing learning in the enterprises, consolidating its position and performance in short, medium and long-term.
  • Support and motivate SMEs and FP centers allocating a qualified trainer, through a mechanism that activate the recognition of tutors in company as key actors for an apprentice, who increase employer’s confidence in this type of work-based learning.

In the first step of the Project, proposals shall be provided to overcome obstacles in SMEs and to improve its participation in apprenticeship, thanks to a strategic roadmap. Furthermore, the recognition of the key role performed by the Co tutor will be pursued through the development of a new qualification in accordance with the EU criteria.

It is expected a positive impact of the Project outcomes in the improvement of education provision offer in FP and the quality of training in order to promote excellence, and promote apprenticeship in SMEs as a key element for a competitive industry.
